Previously in Grimm, Indiana

Previously in Grimm, Indiana, (Issue #1), Grimm, Indiana Police Detectives Surge and Black Cheetah began investigating a prostitution murder spree that saw the deaths of Mama Bear, Cindy Rells, Missy Muffet, Johnny Wolfe and others. Surge and Black Cheetah fought and apprehended Snow "Stiletto" Whitney as the suspect.

Surge and Black Cheetah quickly found themselves in a gang war (Issue #2) between the local chapter of The Klan and a militant anti-fascist clique, Forcefed. Chris Rook, the leader of Forcefed; and Snow picked up a physical relationship they at one time had in the past. Another key player from Snow's past was Pierce Charming, Klan member and mayoral-candidate of Grimm, Indiana. Pierce at some point in the past had taken out a life-insurance policy on Snow. It was revealed Pierce had been working with Black Cheetah, leader of The Klan, in an effort to boost Pierce's popularity with the citizens of Grimm, and to help bring a war to the town to bring attention to the alleged murder-spree of Snow to frame her in the court of public opinion so she could be murdered behind bars. Pierce would have been able to walk away with millions.

As the war continued (Issue #3) Black Cheetah revealed himself after killing several in the town including Dart, The Hero-God, Mercury. Surge was brutally injured in the battle, having both of his arms broken in three separate places each. He lost his right eye as well. Chris Rook eventually found and killed Black Cheetah. During the battle that left the town's morgue filled with bodies, the Chief of Police, Zeus, revealed himself to be plotting with Poseidon, Surge's estranged father who was believed to be dead.

God and The Devil came to Grimm (Issue #4) setting off a chain events with an enormous battle that killed Chris Rook and destroyed the town, leaving a gaping bottomless pit in the middle of it. Snow's relationship with Surge grew closer and the two convinced Pierce Charming to investigate the pit to discover why the battle had ended so suddenly. Pierce agreed, knowing he was already being sent by Zeus and Poseidon into the pit to find Hades.

When both Surge and Zeus arrived at the pit to meet Pierce (Issue #5) Zeus killed Pierce, shoving him into the pit causing him to fall to his death...where he met Hades. After this occurred, Zeus then attempted to kill Surge, apologizing but assuring that it was necessary. Surge killed Zeus, crushing in his skull in, in self-defense.

In Hell, Michigan, Hades explained to Pierce that the ancient book that existed before man, The Grimmoire, a record of all realities, religions, beliefs, deities, fables, legends, and fairytales, which Hades was in charge of safe-keeping, had been lost to some "asshole comic book artist". Hades explained that the artist was using some of the still blank pages of the book to create stories of Surge, meaning that both Surge is himself a rip in the fabric of space and time, but also not even supposed to exist and that by Surge being alive, all of existence was threatened. Pierce agreed to give his soul over fully to Hades for a chance to kill Surge. Hades agreed and unleashed Pierce as the undead and part of a zombie plague across the town. Snow gave Pierce the zombie his final death when she found Surge. She explained that a self-proclaimed field commander of Hades undead army, Hitler Jr. and her two pets, zombie Hansel and zombie Gretal were fighting to take over over what was left of Grimm, Indiana. They are The Returned...
